My [awesome] hubby and I went to Chicago to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. My husband wanted to plan the whole trip and surprise me. If you know me, that is pretty difficult to do, to let go and let someone else plan everything. I’m a planner, I love planning, I love knowing what we’re doing. But even more than that, I LOVE surprises, so I was TOTALLY game for him to plan everything. 🙂
Despite our flight fiasco (I will explain in more detail in a later post) with Delta canceling our flight and we had to completely book a new flight with a different airline and drive 3.5 hours to get to the airport. So we cut our vacation short by several hours due to this, but of course, we still made the best of it and were determined to have an awesome anniversary weekend.
Our first night in Chicago my hubby reserved a table for us at Ditka’s.
The menu is fairly normal for a high-end steakhouse, at least the prices reflect that (because they are very pricey). The place seems fairly small but there is an upstairs area where you can reserve for private parties. However, the bathrooms for the entire establishment are upstairs. When I went to use the restroom there was a private party going on upstairs that I had to “walk through” to get to the bathroom. Which was a little annoying.
The drinks are pretty spendy but they have their own signature cocktails and they are pretty good. I had the Coach’s Punch.
They bring you bread before the meal. If you are on any kind of lifestyle eating plan, you’ll probably want to skip the extra carbs. But if you allow yourself those occasional treats, go for the bread! It’s really good and the butter you get with it is super smooth!
My favorite was the pretzel bread and my hubby loves sourdough, so that was definitely his favorite.
The main meal.
I didn’t order a salad, because honestly with these prices, it just wasn’t worth it. I ordered the Prime Filet Mignon, which from what the server told me is THE best steak on the menu, quality wise.
This is only an 8 oz steak so I got Au gratin potatoes.
My hubby got the BBQ Baby Back Ribs with King Crab add-on.
My opinion on the steak:
It was good. Not nearly the best steak I’ve had. And trust me, I’ve had A LOT of steaks. This steak was cooked well. The seasoning was a little bland, but the seared crust was perfectly salty, but the crust was only on one side of the steak.
The Au gratin potatoes:
They had caramelized onions on them, which I picked most of them off, but I did try some them and they were good. But again, the potatoes were a little bland and not seasoned enough.
The ribs were very very good. The amount of sweet with heat, in my opinion, was perfect. They were cooked perfectly, fell off the rib and the flavor was awesome. My hubby is a bit of a wuss when it comes to the spice of things and although he loved the sweetness of it, he felt it had a bit too much heat for his taste.
I tried it and it was really good, but my personal favorite crab is snow crab because it is sweeter. My hubby is the same way, but this King Crab is definitely a solid 2nd as far as taste in crab goes.
This place was a great experience. The vibe and ambiance were great. The food, in my honest opinion, was way overpriced. That opinion is just based on my steak experience. I AM, however, VERY VERY VERY picky about steaks and know a great steak when I taste one.
If you happen to be in the Chicago area I do recommend eating here, just don’t waste your money on the steak, go for the ribs instead 😉
